Our Lenten Mission
Come and Be Fed
Frank Runyeon, known to many as the co-star with Meg Ryan on As the World Turns, will be with us on March 21—23, at 7:00 pm each evening to conduct our Lenten Mission this year. It is a different format, based simply on God’s word, since our Lenten preaching will include some focus on both reading the bible, and Scripture and Tradition. His three presentations include:
- Afraid! is a one man play, staged with dramatic lighting and entertaining audience interaction. Its text is the Gospel of Mark, translated into contemporary American speech. As characters and settings and lights constantly shift, the Gospel engages the audience’s imagination , surprises them with flashes of humor, and drives relentlessly forward with all the dramatic suspense you would expect from great theater. Every Christian wonders what it would have been like to be there, in Galilee, and meet Jesus. This evening will help us to have that experience. Plan to join us and bring along your whole family, Sunday, March 21, 7:00 pm in the church.
- The Sermon on the Mount sets the famous sermon in a revealing new setting: as told by the apostle Matthew to the church at Antioch, shortly after the Roman army has burned Jerusalem to the ground. In this dramatic setting the lines we are familiar with from the Gospel take on new meaning in the very human stories of those Matthew may have addressed. There is the livestock merchant, the silk trader, the deacon who can’t stop talking, and the seamstress who spends all her money on clothes, as well as others. At the end, those who have heard this sermon have to decide what they will do now, for they have their own part to play in the story.
- The Letter of James sets the letter in the context of the early church, only 12 years after Jesus’ death when mostly all Christians were also Jewish. There was growing tension between those who thought Jesus was the Messiah and those who didn’t. After the death of Stephen, many Christians left Jerusalem to avoid persecution. How would they deal with the problems they encountered?
Looking at these three Scriptures will help us see ourselves as disciples today. Join us for all three nights of our Lenten Mission. Bring your family and friends to this inspiring Lenten opportunity to understand God’s Word in a new way.
